Hello, all...
I recently d/l the GUS0038 drivers and installed them on my DTK '286.
When I now go to run PLAYMIDI, the computer locks after saying something
like 'calculating patch sizes...' It doesn't even get to loading the
patches, and requires a hard boot to get back to DOS. I never had this
problem with my older PLAYMIDI utility, and reverting back to it (2.06a
disks) solved the problem. My 1MB GUS had been happy with everything
I threw at it until this! Is it that PLAYMIDI doesn't like 286's? I
am upgrading to a 386DX40 shortly.
Thanks...

Hey there all!
A friend of mine is thinking of getting a GUS to write some music
with. He runs a DJ business and wants to write some disco stuff of
his own composition to play at dances and shows, etc...I have been
trying to convince that the GUS would be great for this. I was
wondering if any (or all) of you would like to drop him a line
describing what YOU think the GUS is like...good or bad...for his
purposes. (although I would really like to see him get one)
His e-mail address is
N6IQ@acad1.unbsj.ca
and his name is John Wilson.
I am not to heavy into the music writing (YET) as I am quite busy
with University stuff...so I don't know that much about music writing
with the GUS...he is mainly interested in MOD style stuff (you
know...many channels of ear-throbbing digital loudness!).
Thanks!

Note that since these two are analog drum machines and are very tweakable,
not 2 machine will sound the same. Just checked them, and they sound close
but not the same as mine.

It has more than that. I suppose this comes from a sampling CD, so it's
normal all the samples are not included.

606 are around 100$ while DR660 are still over 400$... maybe it's one reason?
Also, the 606 is an analog drum machine and is tunable, tweakable etc...
so you can alter your sounds.

I myself have also limited to only a few of each sounds, but in reality,
you could easily sample 10 different samples from each sound.

Right relative levels? No two 808 has the same levels. It has separate out
for almost all sounds and they vary greatly from one 808 to another, so
in reality people have to adjust them separately for a particular song.
Best way to deal with this is to maximise the whole thing.

Ah. Well, it's true that my original 808 set released *a year ago when no
tools were available - keep that in mind* was not exactly perfect. However,
since then, people who had bought the drum set disks (3 1.44 disks),
received an update of all my patches. It's like day and night. In particular,
the enveloppes were not that good (cutting the attack of certain drums).
Also, i had based my patchgod software on the SDK which was buggy as hell,
and caused some notes to drop in windows and playmidi.
As soon as my 4 samples from movies are cleared, i'll upload a very cool
techno song in midi format and comes with full of midi custom patches
(just to make your mouth water, one is called heaven, and is pure
Jupiter 8 analog bliss) and cool info. In particular, the updated 808kick1.
Also, a full studio version is available on tape.
Ciao,

Subject: Some New Old Drum Patches
Hi all. Decided that I'd release some legally uninteresting patches to the
gus community. They're not exactly the most useful patches since they've
already got close substitutes out there, but I guess they're better than
nothing.
There are 3 zip files:
- 606drums.zip 125k
- cr78drms.zip 50k
- 808drums.zip 400k
If I remember rightly, the cr78 file has a bass drum (if you really stretch
your imagination!), snare drum, and open and closed hi-hat from a cr78 and a
rim shot and metal noise from a rhythm55. Great if you want super-duper
tinny drum sounds.
The 606 file has bass drum, snare drum, open and closed hi-hat, 3 toms (just
pitch shifts of the same patch - blame Gravis for the duplication), and a
ride cymbal. Not necessarily one of the worlds most exciting drum machines,
but at least you can get a rough idea of the sound. (These things go for big
bucks nowadays for some inexplicable reason - beats me why anyone would buy
one of these rather than a Boss DR660 - maybe it's the sexy silver box).
The 808 file is the largest and most comprehensive. It's got 2 bass drums, 2
snare drums, open and closed hi-hat, two sets of toms (pitch shifts), 2
congas (pitch shifts), 2 claves (pitch shifts), hand clap, rim shot,
cowbell, and ride cymbal from an 808. It also has a few extras: 2 bass
drums, and 2 snare drums, and a set of toms (pitch shifts) from a 909. It
also has a spare hiq which is kind of spiritually at home in amongst these
noises despite the fact that none of the drum machines of the period made it.
They're all recorded in 16-bit (well, about 13-bit really) using as high a
rate as was necessary to catch the sound (44, 32, or 22). They are very
clean and I'm pretty sure they're bug free. The patches have been adjusted
in volume so that they are at about the right relative levels (not trivial
since patch maker lite won't do it). Basically, they should be ready to go
from the moment you download them (and edit your ultrasnd.ini file).
As to why you should bother with my 808 set rather than using the existing
set from Francois, I guess all I can say is that I think my set sounds
better. (Parents always think their children are beautiful). Also, you can
do whatever you want with mine as far as modification and redistribution
goes. (I'm not as protective as most parents).
I haven't checked if I've used any of the same names on the patches as
Francois did, so be careful with overwriting stuff unintentionally.
BTW, in case you don't already know, these are not the sort of patches
you're after if you want real sounding drums. They are meant to sound
electronic.
The sounds are created from analog circuits, not from digital samples.
Chris.

Attention John Smith or similar...
Good Morning John/all
I have had this problem for a while now and I really hope you will be able to
help. I am definitely going to go for a GUS, and was waiting for the MAX,
but I'm not sure I can wait much longer as it affecting my plan for musical
presentations. Should I forget the MAX and go for a standard GUS with the
daughterboard? or is the MAX really on the horizon?
I await your reply with all the usual acoutrements :)
Thanx in advanx - Richard

Subject: Volume problem
Dear Gusicians,
Thanks for solving my last problem (PowerChords Demo worked, actual app
didn't; i needed to run GUS in Conserve Memory mode)! ...now that
i've taken the time to become more familiar with my GUS (which, btw, i
*love* :) perhaps my next problem will be more of a challenge--but for
my sake i hope not :P
I'm using a 256K GUS with Windows...i upgraded my 2.06a ULTMPORT & ULTRASND
drivers with those which come with PatchMaker Lite...they work fine, but i've
experienced a drastic reduction in volume on both MIDI and WAVs! I can
increase the volume in the Ultrasound Mixer each time i boot up, but i'd
prefer a more elegant fix (because, for example, i can barely hear the sound
i've got assigned to the Windows Startup)...numerous times in the written and
on-line documentaion i see references to a volume scroll bar in the driver
setup dialog, but this bar is *not* there! There are two drivers: The
Ultrasound MIDI Port Driver, which contains only hardware configuration
options, and the Ultrasound Audio Driver, which contains hardware
configuration setup, Active Voices, Linear Volume (i tried this both on and
off), Verify Patches, and Patch Memory Options...and i've tried both the
Ultra256k and the Ultrasound drivers in the MIDI Mapper.
Any ideas? ...am i missing something? ...the PatchMaker documentation makes
mention of an ULTRAMID driver, but that's an error, right? ...'cause it came
with an ULTRSND driver but not an ULTRAMID driver; nor did the GUS
installation disks come with an ULTRMID driver...and btw, i can't seem to find
the GUS0038 disk file, if that might help--is that the one i'm gonna have
to shell out $$ for this month even though i bought my GUS last month? :\
Once again, thanks so much for you assistance!
